Gas tariffs to increase by another 4.5% today (1 Feb)

Following a 1.5% increase in gas tariffs last Nov, another 4.5% increase will take effect from the period 1st Feb to 30 Apr. This is according to a press release by City Gas on Tuesday (31 Jan).

Prices will increase from 16.85 cents to 17.61 cents per kilowatt hour as a result of an increase of 20.8% increase in fuel costs compared to the previous quarter.

Netizens have reacted badly to such increases. Once Janice Lim commented sarcastically that it was “very efficient” that the announcement was made today and would take effect tomorrow.

Another said that this move could “make us drown further in the current economic downturn.”

City Gas reviews gas tariffs based on guidelines set by the Energy Market Authority, the gas industry regulator.
